Short- and Long-Term Disability Insurance

Short-Term Disability Insurance generally is available to pay benefits for up to 3, 6, 12, 18, or 24 months. This type of insurance is offered by specialty carriers as well as some of the traditional health insurance carriers.
Long-Term disability Insurance is available through many carriers. Eligibility depends on occupation and earnings level.
Both types of insurance are underwritten, and eligibility is based on medical history.
The terms of your particular long-term disability policy will dictate how long your benefits continue. Although many plans pay benefits until age 65, others pay for a fixed number of years, often five or ten. If you become disabled after age 60, most plans allow you to receive benefits even after you turn 65 (usually up to the age at which you are eligible for full, unreduced Social Security benefits).
Virtually all policies currently limit payments for disabilities based on mental or nervous disorders, usually to 24 months of benefits.
Failing to obtain ongoing medical treatment and returning to work may also terminate your benefits.
Disability insurance is not offered to Medicare beneficiaries.

Your PDQ represents your chances of becoming seriously ill or injured and unable to work for an extended period of time. And with so much riding on your ability to earn an income, it's one very important number to know. To calculate your PDQ, you'll need to answer six simple questions.
